Introducing Our Teachers

Julia C. Jonson

Creative Director, Yoga Teacher; E-RYT® 500, YACEP®

Julia has been practicing and studying yoga and meditation since 1991 and teaching both disciplines since 2007.

Julia incorporates restorative postures and Ayurveda into her practice sessions with a strong emphasis on philosophy. She takes a therapeutic approach to both her group classes and individual sessions. She has experience working with special populations, including athletes, those recovering from injuries and illnesses, people with cerebral palsy, and more.

Julia holds E-RYT® 500, YACEP® (Continuing Education Provider) with the Yoga Alliance. She has many years of therapeutics and general study with Gabriel Halpern, founder and former director of the Yoga Circle in Chicago. Julia also draws inspiration from Desiree Rumbaugh’s instruction and the wisdom of the Venerable Bhante Sujatha. Julia also holds a certification in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell.

Julia and her husband Andrew ran a thriving yoga center in Chicago’s northern suburbs for more than five years. Julia is currently the creative director of programming and marketing for TBY Yoga, a place she and Andrew reinvented in the time of Covid. Julia is the founder and lead teacher of TBY Yoga School, a 200-hour yoga teacher training program.

Earning a degree in Broadcasting & Film with a minor in Sociology from the University of Central Missouri, Julia worked for more than a decade as a television newscast producer in the South Bend, Orlando, and Chicago markets. Julia blogs and writes articles about stress relief and mindful living. Among her published works is a children’s book, Just Me & The Trees, A Children’s Guide to Meditation. Julia is the mother of two teenagers and a rescue dog. She enjoys nature walks, plant-based cooking, trail rides, reading, ballroom dancing, and of course, yoga.

Andrew J. Gurvey

Yoga Teacher/Engineer

Andrew has been practicing yoga since 2005 and he began teaching in 2009.

In addition to earning his E-RYT certification, Andrew has hundreds of practice and study hours with his primary yoga teacher Desiree Rumbaugh. In addition, Andrew completed Desiree’s Wisdom Warriors training that she co-leads with physical therapist Karen Church. Furthermore, Andrew draws from the dharma teachings of Gabriel Halpern and the Venerable Bhante Sujatha.

Andrew offers an alignment-based approach in his group classes while striving to keep the atmosphere light-hearted and accessible to beginning students as well as long-time practitioners. As a teacher, Andrew’s primary goal is to provide stress relief and an opportunity to feel better in body and mind. Andrew’s favorite yoga pose is, hand’s down, handstand!

Andrew has co-organized and co-led three yoga retreats, including two in Tulum, Mexico, and one on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula.

Besides teaching yoga and co-owning TBY Yoga for many years with his wife Julia, Andrew is an engineer at Underwriter’s Laboratories. He has worked in UL’s Fire Safety Division since 2003. Andrew earned his degree in Government & International Relations from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 2000 and 2001, Andrew embarked on the life-changing journey of living on a kibbutz in Rishon Lezion, Israel.

In his free time, Andrew enjoys guitar playing and singing, voraciously reading about politics, long outdoor hikes, a plant-based diet, as well as riding one of his many bikes. Likewise, Andrew has a special love for technology and makes sure he and his family members are up-to-date with the latest gadgets. Andrew is passionate about using technology responsibly and as a way to benefit the greater good.

Andrew lives in Libertyville with his wife, two step-children, and his rescue dog, Reggie.

Venerable Bhante Sujatha

Bhante Sujatha is singularly focused on adding more love to the world.  Bhante teaches loving-kindness meditation to people around the globe for all those seeking the art of happiness and contentment.  His approach to meditation is deep and simple, bringing core Buddhist teachings to everyone in a way that is practical and easy to understand.
