A. How Structure Governs Function (Saturday 10:30 am - 1:30 pm)
In bodies, what works is propagated, and what doesn't work is not passed along. These evolutionary pressures mean that every last structure is built the way it is in service of its function. The job of the anatomist is to learn the structures by studying their function. In this interactive exploration, participants will learn why the axial skeleton (pelvis, spine and shoulders) is built the way it is, why the bones are shaped as they are, and how/why some muscles get tight.
B. The Physiology of Stretching (Saturday 2:00 - 5:00 pm)
In bodywork, we often toss around the term stretching, but how many people actually know what stretching is?
The stretching that many people practice does not actually "stretch" anything, though a cascade of neurological adaptations occur in response to what is often called stretching. Participants will learn about these neural adaptations, why various length holds impacts the nervous system differently, and the interface of stretching with the fight/flight/freeze response in the autonomic nervous system.
C. The Impetus for Cueing in Class (Sunday 11:00 am - 2:30 pm)
Since structure follows function, it's imperative teachers have a baseline understanding of the structures in order to clarify their cueing.
Without understanding structure, many teachers inadvertently ask their students to make movements that can be injurious. To create awesome classes, participants will apply their expanding knowledge of structure to common yogasana and develop a repertoire of cues that honor the integrity of the body's structures.
