Dear TBY Yoga Community,
With a heavy heart, Andrew and I announce the closing of TBY Yoga effective April 30th. The studio has always been a labor of love and a passion project for both of us. It has been my full-time job where I’ve been grateful for the equal partnership of my husband and fellow teacher Andrew Gurvey. We purchased the studio together in October of 2015 and molded it into our dream yoga studio. Then Covid hit. Attendance and revenue have declined by about 65%, and yet, despite that sharp decrease, we remained hopeful and optimistic that we could rebound. We’ve left no stone unturned in working to salvage our beloved yoga place. The community has been generous with donations (thank you!); however, with TBY costs accumulating for an entire year, it is simply unsustainable to remain open.

Teaching yoga requires passion, discipline, and enthusiasm. Andrew and I both had that for many years,  yet, we will both admit this past year has taken a huge toll emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially. At this point, we would like to take some time to re-invigorate and reclaim our love of teaching yoga without the difficulties the past year has presented.

So, what’s next? We will continue to offer several Livestream classes weekly through April 30th, 2021. This final month of business allows you to use up any remaining classes on your packages. We are currently offering $12 single classes and 5-class packages. As of April 16th, we will stop selling 5-class packages. You may also use class packages on our Yoga Videos page on the honor system (you email support@tbyyoga.com telling us how many you used). We regret that we cannot offer refunds and we appreciate your understanding of the nature of us working at a deficit for more than a full year.

We are already working closely with the teachers who’ve led classes at TBY and we’ll make sure you can stay in touch with them regarding their future offerings. Andrew and I will continue to teach and keep you posted on our future Livestream and Outdoor classes. I am entertaining renting space to teach in-person classes in the fall (with all necessary precautions in place for Covid, of course). I have created a yoga teacher training program and am currently leading a small training with two future teachers. I plan to hold another training next year! In addition, I will hold workshops where yoga teachers can earn CEU’s. These projects feed my soul!

A TBY student has heavily investigated opening a co-op in Mundelein. A co-op would essentially consist of an army of volunteers, run by a board of directors. Yearly membership dues from students and a small monthly rental fee paid by teachers would cover rent, utilities, and other operating costs. If this interests you, please send an email to support@tbyyoga.com titled “co-op” and we will gauge interest.

Yoga philosophy teaches us about impermanence, self-reflection, and growth. I, personally, had an idea of how things would be with TBY. Life had other plans. As Andrew and I navigate yet another challenging transition, we hope to stay connected with many of you. We remain forever hopeful that this end is a new beginning.

Sincerely,

Julia C. Jonson & Andrew J. Gurvey
