Dear Yoga Community,

We shared some big news with our teachers and staff last night (11/11/20). We announced that TBY Yoga would continue in a different form without a physical building. It is truly the end of an era for a space that holds such deep meaning for so many of us. Over the past nine months, we’ve been able to forge tight-knit relationships among the staff and community members as we provided skillful instruction with Livestream and Outdoor classes. As sad and heavy-hearted as we are right now to be losing our brick and mortar we have witnessed that bonds and connections with people are what matter most — not a building. Much like the people in a family unit make up a home, staff and students make up a yoga studio. As such, we will continue our business with a Livestream model, and when the weather is right we will hold regular Outdoor classes. We may also have opportunities to rent out big spaces for per-use events. We are hopeful.

As you know, we reopened in September and did not have enough in-person attendance to sustain or even justify the costs and debts of monthly rent and utilities. We were able to come to an agreement with our rental company and will need to vacate the space by December 1st, 2020. As such, we had determined that our last day for In-Studio classes will be November 28th, 2020. However, with the sharp rise in Covid numbers and the recommendations from the IDPH to only leave our homes for essential needs, it looks like we may have already had our last indoor class. Typically, we would be spending this time renegotiating a new lease. You can understand how the immense expense of keeping the building open is simply not an option given current circumstances. Many of you have mentioned that Andrew and I have done absolutely everything we could to keep the building. We have. We thank you for your encouragement, your assistance, and your presence. Our emotional and physical health is precious, and those are in jeopardy as well. This change will help us to restore our health and sanity. So, for now, we will all have to take things one day, one step at a time, and continue to provide skillful instruction with an open heart. The hope is you will “shapeshift” with us.

We understand you may be deeply saddened by this news. Many of you have been with us either Livestream or Outdoor during this time of closure and change. Rest assured, we feel your pain. Please know that we are still here; it’s just different.

If you purchased In-Studio classes before Covid or even recently, we can transfer them to a Livestream plan. Email support@tbyyoga in order to have classes converted.  We will give the appropriate number of classes commensurate with the price you paid, which will total more classes. Please understand that as a small business that’s taken a huge hit, we will not be able to provide refunds.  Please keep in mind that we have also provided a library of free Yoga Videos for your use as well. We understand that some of you have stated that you can’t use Livestream models and would prefer refunds.  Unfortunately, we are simply not in a position to do this, and we hope you will adjust to the offerings we have.

TBY is holding our first socially distanced prop sale this Sunday, November 15th, from 4:00- 6:00 pm at the studio. We accept Venmo, Paypal, and cash. We are selling essentials: blankets, blocks, bolsters and dowel rods, chairs, pranayama pillows, wall rope sets, slings, and hardware. We will offer sets and ala-carte options; some prices are listed below. All proceeds go toward the debt we’ve incurred while trying to maintain the building. Stay tuned for a furniture, trinket, and tapestry sale! (Tentatively Friday 11/20/20 5:00-7:00 pm)

Please join us on 11/28/20 at noon for a special shape-shifting ceremony involving the entire community. Please write a fond memory, some loving thoughts, or anything that comes to mind on a small, nicely folded piece of paper. We will put our fond thoughts in a biodegradable box and bury them (give them to the earth) near the studio. I welcome you to bring any other ceremonial “flair” to our event. We will be outside and 6 feet apart with elbow bumping in place of hugs. I can’t think of a better way to close one chapter and open another.

Sincerely & With Love,

Julia Jonson & Andrew Gurvey
